SAGES STATEMENT ON POLICY
LAPAROSCOPIC APPENDECTOMY
"Standard" surgical appendectomy is a highly effective procedure with low morbidity and mortality. The safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic appendectomy have been demonstrated; it is neither experimental nor investigational. Since laparoscopy provides an alternative technique for performing appendectomy, this procedure should only be performed by a surgeon who is trained in both laparoscopic and open techniques. Conversion to open appendectomy should be done if there is any question regarding the safe conduct of the laparoscopic approach. Therefore, it should only be performed in facilities where adequate equipment, trained operating room personnel, and necessary instrumentation are available. The indications for appendectomy should be identical whether performed laparoscopically or open.
This statement was approved by the Board of Governors of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) October, 1992. It was prepared by the SAGES Standards of Practice Committee.
