Barrett’s Esophagus:  Today’s Cutting Edge
Wednesday, October 10, 2007
New Orleans Marriott, 3rd Floor, Mardi Gras F-G-H
5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Chair:               Mark Talamini, M.D.
Co-Chair:         Mark Callery, M.D.

Description:

Barrett’s esophagus continues to be a condition of great interest, controversy, and significant scientific and clinical advancement.  Its relationship with gastroesophageal reflux disease, its increased risk for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, and the spectrum of potential treatments, create a confusing smorgasbord of data and treatment options for surgeons, gastroenterologists, primary care doctors, and patients.  Currently, a patient carrying a diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus might get a photodynamic therapy session in one center, mucosal resection in another center, and an esophagectomy in yet a third.  The objective of this session is to provide:  a current update on the best methods for the diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus; current therapies available for Barrett’s esophagus, and; what is currently known with regards to outcomes.

Objectives:

At the end of the session, the attendee will:

  1. Understand the issues regarding definition and diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus.
  1. Have an understanding of new minimally invasive ablative therapies and their indications.
  1. Be provided with current indications for esophagectomy both robotic, laparoscopic, and using traditional surgical methods.

Understand the current state of data regarding outcomes and costs of therapies for Barrett’s esophagus.
