SAGES Joint Symposiums at ACS - 2003

SAGES & SSAT invite you to join them for their 2003 Symposium & Reception

Laparoscopic Colectomy: Why are We Waiting?

Wednesday, October 22nd , 2003. , 5:15 PM
Room: Regency Ballroom A & B,
Hyatt Regency Hotel, 151 East Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL 60601
During the ACS Clinical Congress

Course Chair: Tonia Young-Fadok, MD

Symposium Description:

This symposium will focus on the controversies that continue to exist regarding laparoscopic colectomy, in particular the use of laparoscopic techniques for resection of colorectal cancer. Acknowledged authorities representing both sides of the controversy will present their viewpoints and supporting evidence. Clinical data will be discussed alongside basic science studies that suggest a potential oncologic benefit of a laparoscopic approach. Methods of acquiring the necessary laparoscopic skills safely in benign disease will be addressed as will progressing to more advanced procedures. There will be discussion regarding the most appropriate means of introducing guidelines for performing laparoscopic resection of cancer to address the need to maintain patient safety.

Symposium Objectives:

  • To appreciate the reasons for the current embargo on laparoscopic colectomy for cancer
  • To understand the role that experience plays in avoiding tumor implants in laparoscopic colectomy for colorectal cancer
  • To recognize the studies that suggest a potential oncologic advantage of the laparoscopic approach
  • To learn how to safely acquire the skills necessary to perform laparoscopic colectomy
  • To consider approaching more complex procedures by building on existing skills
  • To discuss the potential need for guidelines to balance surgical practice and patient safety.

Accreditation

The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor Continuing Medical Education for physicians. The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons designates this Continuing Medical Education Activity for:

2.0 credit hours

in Category 1 of the physicians Recognition Awards for the American Medical Association. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that (s)he actually spent in the educational activity.
